Garrett Ekbo skriver på side 93 I Landscape for Living: ‘The larger plants live with us the people IN the air space of the landscape, resisting and eluding gravity in an upward aspiration of their growth, yet firmly anchored with their roots entrenched in the solid earth-bound mantle rock.’

‘The plants live in space and in the earth at once, and each and every plant is in itself an organisation of space, containing within its three-dimensional silhouette a most complex and variable enclosure, a structure of marvellous articulation and delicacy, a piece of constructivist sculpture of the most tremendous richness in variety, ranging in scale from the microcosm of the moss clump to the macrocosm of the great tropical banyan tree.’

‘Earth, rock and water are bound by gravity; plants defy it.’
